Disclaimer & Scope of Responsibility

Honest Abe Plumbing LLC, serving the Lowcountry including Summerville, Goose Creek, Hanahan, Ladson, Moncks Corner, Daniel Island, North Charleston, and Downtown Charleston, SC.

We built our business on honesty and straight talk, so this page is written the same way. We want every customer to understand upfront what we can guarantee, what we can’t, and why, before any work begins.

Hidden Conditions Discovered During Work

Plumbing problems don’t always show everything at first. Pipes run behind walls, under concrete slabs, and above ceilings. Before we open anything up, we can only assess what’s visible or detectable with standard diagnostic tools.

Once work is underway, we sometimes discover conditions that were not apparent during the initial inspection or estimate. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Corroded, deteriorated, or non-code-compliant existing pipes
  • Previous repairs or modifications done incorrectly by others
  • Tree root intrusion into sewer or water lines
  • Water damage, mold, or rot already present inside walls or under floors
  • Pipes that have shifted, collapsed, or failed in areas adjacent to the original repair zone
  • Multiple leak points in aging supply or drain lines

When we uncover a hidden condition, we will stop and walk you through what we found before proceeding. We’ll explain your options clearly and give you a revised estimate before doing any additional work. We will never perform unapproved work and then bill you for it.

However, additional labor, materials, or time required to address newly discovered conditions are not included in the original estimate and will be invoiced separately. We are not responsible for pre-existing damage that was concealed within the structure prior to our arrival.

Landscaping, Yard, and Exterior Damage

Some plumbing repairs, particularly sewer line repairs, water main work, or irrigation fixes, require digging or trenching in your yard, driveway, or landscaped areas.

We take care to minimize disruption, but we cannot guarantee that the following will be unaffected:

  • Grass, sod, or turf
  • Shrubs, plants, flower beds, or garden areas in the work zone
  • Mulch, decorative rock, or ground cover
  • Irrigation lines, invisible fence wires, or other buried utilities installed by others (locate and flag these before we dig, or let us know so we can take extra care)
  • Pavers, decorative concrete, or hardscape in or immediately adjacent to the trench area

After the job is complete, we will backfill and tamp the excavated area, but we do not provide landscaping restoration, sod replacement, or hardscape repair as part of standard plumbing work unless specifically quoted and included in your written estimate.

If landscaping restoration is important to you, let us know before work begins so we can discuss what’s realistic and whether to include it in your scope of work.

Drywall, Sheetrock, and Wall Access

Accessing pipes inside walls, ceilings, or enclosed cavities often requires cutting into drywall or sheetrock. This is a routine and sometimes unavoidable part of plumbing work.

Unless your written estimate specifically includes drywall repair or patch work, Honest Abe Plumbing LLC is not responsible for:

  • Patching or replacing drywall that was cut or removed to access pipes
  • Repainting walls, ceilings, or trim after the repair
  • Matching existing wall texture, finish, or paint color
  • Tile, wallpaper, paneling, or decorative finishes that must be removed or cut to access pipes

We will make clean, reasonably sized cuts. We’re not going to tear out more than needed. But restoring cosmetic finishes is typically a separate trade (drywall contractor, painter), and we’ll be upfront with you about what needs to happen after we’re done.

Flooring Access

In some situations, such as slab leaks, drain line repairs, or fixture replacements, accessing the plumbing requires removing flooring or cutting through a concrete slab.

Unless specifically included in your written estimate, Honest Abe Plumbing LLC is not responsible for:

  • Reinstalling tile, hardwood, laminate, or other flooring materials
  • Matching existing flooring materials, grout, or finish
  • Repairing or replacing flooring that was damaged as a result of the underlying leak (pre-existing water damage is not our responsibility)
  • Resurfacing or finishing concrete after slab work

We will discuss the extent of required floor access with you before cutting. For slab work especially, we try to minimize the cut area and explain what restoration will be needed so there are no surprises.

No Guarantee on Diagnosis of Intermittent or Hidden Problems

Plumbing problems are sometimes intermittent or impossible to reproduce on demand. If a leak or issue is not present at the time of our service call, we can only report on what we observe. We cannot guarantee that an issue we were unable to reproduce has been resolved, and we are not responsible for return trips required to address a problem that did not manifest during our visit.

Estimates vs. Final Invoices

Written estimates are based on what we can see and assess before work begins. If conditions change, such as hidden problems being discovered, the scope of work expanding at your direction, or code compliance requiring additional steps, the final invoice may differ from the estimate. We will always communicate changes with you before they affect your bill.
